Plan of Study
A Plan of Study (POS) is required by the Graduate School for all graduate students. The plan of study serves as a contract between the student, their advisory committee, and the Graduate School. It lists the courses that the student expects to take for their degree program, any concentration(s) the student is pursuing, and the faculty members who will mentor them throughout their study. A plan of study can be changed.
Plan of Study Process. The Plan of Study Generator via myPurdue is not accessible until about 1-2 months into your first active semester. It is recommended you complete a plan of study worksheet in the meantime and file your plan of study by your second semester. PhD students must submit their plan before they can schedule their pre-liminary exam (typically year 3).
- Course Requirements. Familiarize yourself with your degree program's degree requirements.
- Course Catalog. Use the course catalog for future planning. Refer to historical semesters as needed.
- Plan of Study Worksheet. Map courses to be used to fulfill your plan of study early in your degree.
- Submit Plan of Study. Submit your official plan of study in the Plan of Study Generator via myPurdue by your second semester; PhD students must submit their plan of study before they can schedule their pre-lim (typically year 3).
Deadlines. IE recommends you file your POS in your second semester. The Graduate School final deadline is one day prior to the recommends you submit your plan at least a month in advance of the start of the session of expected graduation to ensure sufficient time for departmental review, otherwise you may incur a $200 late fee.
